A Basset Ode
They look so old to be so young, so grave to be so gay;
These Basset Hounds with furrowed brows are in my heart to stay.
With four short legs and wagging tails and ears that drag upon the ground, And a funny habit, all their own, of sleeping wholly upside down.
They offer lots of love to share,
With friends and kin, and more to spare.
Their dress is strange, you may surmise, Wearing coats just twice their size!
A Basset is a clown by nature, true; They cheer you up when you are blue.
And when it’s time for them to doze, You might well find them at your toes.
